About Me

Hi there, I'm Gwen

Thank you for popping in to read a bit about me!  Capegypsy is my passion, an expression of a boho, free spirited, eco conscious lifestyle.

Most days I can be found designing and creating pieces for these collections. Pouring over like minded articles, drinking coffee and taking photographs. Other days are spent on wanderings with my husband Tim, a professional drummer, who fills my life with laughter, love and music. Together we fill time with road trips, beach days, coffee's and concerts.

I truly appreciate you taking the time to view the Capegypsy way of life.

The Brand Journey

Welcome to CapeGypsy,

CapeGypsy is a lifestyle brand tailored to those with an authentic passion for sustainability. Started in 2015, in Cape Town, as a hashtag to express my sense of existing lightly with our earth, it has grown into a beautiful lifestyle brand. Journeying through life, I have become innately aware of how passionately my concern for the individual carbon footprint is, this coupled with a serious case of wanderlust has led to the creation of these collections. Each collection integrates sustainable and eco conscious choices, from fabric to packaging.

The Nautilus collection holds my favourite pieces, lovingly designed and handmade. The Nautilus itself is one of the oldest living ocean creatures, it's chambered, spiral shell holds much symbolic meaning. Each chamber represents the perfect balance for potential growth, between present needs and future needs.

The Golden Ratio or Sacred Geometry can be seen in its beautiful spiral shape, this geometry can be found in many places in Nature e.g a sunflower, pine cones, or the shape of our galaxy. This Fibonacci ratio exists in all living things, from our own DNA to the natural world, highlighting for me, the intricate way in which we are linked. Emphasizing further the importance of treading lightly and being aware of our impact on our earth

The Nautilus is a symbol of creativity and continuous growth, as we move through life our minds grow and shape with new ideas. The age of awareness, I feel we are in now, shows the growing potential for us as human beings to reshape our ideas and behaviour patterns to have a more positive impact on our earth.

As a symbol of strength and timelessness I feel the Nautilus embodies the essence of Capegypsy. With each new chamber the Nautilus creates a new space for growth, in each of my collections my intention is to create space for further growth and expression within sustainable fashion and lifestyle choices.

Within the Nautilus collection are my PET felt bags, the felt is made from +-12 recycled plastic bottles. Each year an average of 8 million tons of plastic finds its way into the ocean, trapping sealife or breaking down into microplastics, invading the sea and almost impossible to retrieve.

PET felt is a sustainable and constructive way to provide some relief to this problem. If we continue to source and replace non recyclable or non biodegradable materials in our lives with materials such as this, we begin to contribute a more positive impact on the damage being done by plastic.

Please feel free to view these beautiful, sustainable bags and my fav pieces in the Store, eco consciously designed, sustainably sourced and inspired by a sense of happy wanderlust.
