In this blog post, we'll explore the importance of ethical chocolate sourcing and share five delectable chocolate-making recipes that make perfect Valentine's gifts.

  • Direct Trade: Some chocolate makers engage in direct trade with cocoa farmers. This approach fosters a transparent and mutually beneficial relationship between the producer and the chocolate maker, ensuring fair wages and better working conditions.

  • Organic Farming: Choose chocolate made from organically grown cocoa beans. Organic farming practices eliminate the use of harmful pesticides and chemicals, promoting biodiversity and preserving the health of both the environment and farmers.

Now that we know what to look when sourcing delicious chocolate for those we love, lets delve into a few recipes for Valentines’ Day spoils:

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil

  • 1/4 cup maple syrup

  • 1 cup freeze-dried raspberries

Instructions:

b. Stir in the maple syrup until well combined.

c. Fold in the freeze-dried raspberries.

d. Pour the mixture into a lined baking pan and refrigerate until set.

e. Once set, cut into bars, and share the love!

Ingredients:

  • 200g ethically sourced white chocolate

  • 1/2 cup roasted pistachios, chopped.

  • Dried rose petals or edible flowers for decoration (optional)

Instructions:

a. Melt the white chocolate in a heatproof bowl.

c. Pour the mixture onto a lined baking sheet, spreading it evenly.

d. Sprinkle dried rose petals on top for a touch of elegance.

e. Allow the bark to cool and harden before breaking it into pieces.


Hazelnut Crunch Milk Chocolate Hearts:


Ingredients:

  • 200g ethically sourced milk chocolate

  • 1/2 cup toasted hazelnuts, chopped.

  • Edible gold dust for decoration (optional)

Instructions:

a. Melt the milk chocolate in a heatproof bowl.

b. Stir in the chopped hazelnuts.

c. Pour the mixture into heart-shaped moulds.

d. Allow the chocolate to set in the refrigerator.

e. Once set, pop the hearts out of the moulds and dust with edible gold for a romantic touch.


Chili Infused Dark Chocolate Covered Strawberries:


Ingredients:

  • 200g ethically sourced dark chocolate

  • Fresh strawberries washed and dried.

  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder

  • Edible gold flakes for decoration (optional)

Instructions:

a. Melt the dark chocolate with chili powder in a heatproof bowl.

b. Dip each strawberry into the chocolate mixture, coating it partially.

c. Place the chocolate-covered strawberries on a parchment-lined tray.

d. Allow the chocolate to set, and if desired, sprinkle edible gold flakes for a luxurious touch.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole coffee beans (I use Capegypsy’s own brand Wild & Bean)

  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate.

  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil (optional)

Instructions:

  • Select Quality Coffee Beans:

  • Start with fresh, high-quality coffee beans. Choose a variety that you enjoy, as it will contribute to the overall flavour of your chocolate-covered treats.

  • Roast (Optional):

  • If your coffee beans are not already roasted, you can roast them in a pan over medium heat for a few minutes, stirring constantly until they become aromatic. Be careful not to burn them.

  • Melt the Chocolate:

  • In a microwave-safe bowl or using a double boiler, melt the dark chocolate. If you find the chocolate too thick, add a teaspoon of vegetable oil to achieve a smoother consistency.

  • Combine Coffee Beans and Chocolate:

  • Add the coffee beans to the melted chocolate, ensuring they are well-coated. Use a spoon or fork to gently stir and coat each coffee bean evenly with chocolate.

  • Remove Excess Chocolate:

  • Lift the chocolate-covered coffee beans out of the bowl, allowing any excess chocolate to drip off. You can tap the fork gently against the side of the bowl to help with this.

  • Melt the White Chocolate:
