My passion for Nature Photography.

It's Nature Photography Day and I'm sharing my passion for nature photography, as well as more information on the Expo Metro Art Tunnel where one of my favourite images will be displayed.

Hello there, Fellow Wanderers

Gwen Rankin Photography

Nature Photography Day is celebrated on June 15th annually, to recognize the beauty of nature and the art of capturing it through photography. It is a day to appreciate the wonders of nature and to encourage people to explore and capture its beauty. This is a special day for me as it allows me to celebrate my passion both for our environment and photography, especially as it follows on from World Environment Day and World Ocean Day.

This day also serves as an opportunity for photographers, both amateur and professional, to share their work with others. It is a great way for photographers to connect with each other, learn from each other’s experiences, and gain inspiration from one another’s work. Celebrating Nature Photography Day helps us remember why we love nature so much and encourages us to take time out of our busy lives to appreciate its beauty. This weekend, during a break in the rain, we went on a beautiful walk to help collect litter for World Ocean Day, as the rainbow spread through the clouds over the sea, we were reminded of all the beautiful ways nature shows up.

This year Nature Photography Day coincides with the opening of the Expo Metro Exhibition in Barcelona, an exhibition I am proud to be a part of. One of my favourite black and white nature images is being exhibited in large scale format and I am so grateful.

This exhibition allows artists of all disciplines to showcase their work on billboards, located in iconic locations, throughout the world, providing a unique experience both for artists and the viewing public. Each exhibition unites artists of all disciplines from countries around the world. The chosen exhibition location is in a public space, allowing the works to be directly viewed and accessed by the public. Expo Metro is choosing to use these large scale works in an aim to change the face of our urban landscape globally, by replacing 1% of outdoor advertising, with Art. In 4 years, Expo Metro has produced 8 Expo exhibitions across 7 cities, within 5 countries: Paris, London, Berlin, Monaco, New York, Los Angeles, Miami and now Spain. 88 individual adverts have been replaced with Art, accumulating a total of 4141 individual artworks that have been viewed by 5.5 million people.

From this week, 15th June to the 28th of June, 124 billboard artworks, from 2 648 artists from around the world, will be on display in an incredible, immersive experience. This experience will take place on a giant 180-meter billboard in the Passeig de Gracia Metro station in Barcelona, spanning both sides of the main corridor that connect L3 and L4. This will turn the metro into an enormous public Art gallery. If you are able to, why not celebrate Nature Photography Day by joining us for the opening on the 15th of June at 14:00, or follow these amazing artworks in their spaces on the tunnel at https://expometro.co , or live on Facebook and Instagram.

One of my favourite black and white macro-nature, photographic images will be displayed on section 28, to have the privilege to be a part of such an event surrounded by brilliant artists is an inspiring and humbling experience.

To me, black and white photography is a timeless art form that has been used to capture the beauty of nature in a unique way. It allows photographers to focus on the subtle nuances found in nature that are often overlooked, creating stunning images that are both captivating and thought-provoking. By removing colour, we can focus on composition and light, creating unique compositions that emphasize the shapes, lines, and forms found in nature. With its ability to bring out details, that may otherwise go unnoticed in colour photographs, it is an excellent way to appreciate the patterns found in nature. It is this detail that often fascinates me and why I chose this photographic image of the South African Daisy to display.

The South African Daisy is my favourite flower, I love its multiple colours and unusually shaped petals. To photograph this flower is so fascinating and I feel using the medium of black and white highlights its beautiful symmetry, sequencing, and patterns. African daisies have intricate patterns in their petals that often follow the Fibonacci sequence, which is a mathematical pattern found in nature. The petals of the African daisy are delicate and fragile, yet they are also incredibly symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing. As it unfolds to the sun and curls closed as the light fades, it allows us to view both its unusual petals and intricate lines, within a gentle fragility.

Patterns in flower petals are a fascinating phenomenon that has been studied by mathematicians and scientists for centuries. From the Fibonacci sequence to the golden ratio, flower petals often display mathematical patterns that can be used to understand the underlying structure of nature. By studying these patterns, we can gain insight into how plants grow and develop, as well as how they interact with their environment. Additionally, these patterns can be used to create beautiful works of art or even inspire new designs in architecture and engineering.

The popularity of black and white nature photography is unquestionable, it has been used for decades to capture the beauty of nature, as well as other subjects such as architecture, landscapes, wildlife, food, fashion, celebrities and more. Today’s photographers have access to a wide variety of cameras that can be easily modified to use black and white film or digital sensors. With so many options available for capturing the beauty found in nature and beyond with black and white photography, it is easy to see why this style will continue to be popular for years to come. The economy of black and white photography is also what makes it so appealing to both professionals and casual photographers alike. In this type of photography, the photographer is not constrained by rules. This means that photographers can focus more on creativity and innovation. It’s important to remember that black and white photography has a unique style all its own, challenging you as a photographer to create your own style and perspective.

This amazing, immersive exhibition has allowed me to display my style and perspective as a nature photographer, within a space that supports and celebrates our environment. Reminding us that even with displaying our creativity, we can be mindful towards our footprint on the environment. So, this World Nature Photography Day, why not stop for a moment and capture a beautiful reminder of nature. If you have a moment, feel free to drop them in my DM’s and let’s share our connection through nature.

Take Care,

Gwen
